Business Description

The Yatir region, situated in the southern part of the Judean Hills, boasts a captivating history of winemaking. Travelers and observers can witness the remarkable and expansive wine press, a testament to a thriving wine industry that dates back over 2,500 years to the reign of the kings of Judah. This region served as a significant hub of Jewish settlement between the destruction of the Second Temple and the advent of the Islamic period. The livelihood of the early inhabitants revolved mainly around cultivating and processing grapes and olives. Renowned for its excellent vine-growing conditions, wines from this region were exported to Egypt, Rome, and various parts of Israel.

David Ben Gurion, with his vision of making the Negev region flourish, sought to plant a forest in the Yatir area. Seeking guidance, he consulted with selected experts who concluded that the region, characterized by excessive dryness and heat, was unsuitable for tree cultivation. However, Ben Gurion had different plans in mind and famously declared, “Replace the experts!” The result was the establishment of one of Israel’s largest forests, spanning approximately 40,000 dunams, bordering the desert. The forest, named after the biblical Levite city of Yatir, which lay in ruins, serves as a green sanctuary and a popular hiking destination. It also serves as an experimental model for innovative methods to combat desertification. Over the years, the forest has become a vital ecological asset and has been the subject of extensive research by numerous scientists. Nestled within this expansive forest, amidst valleys and slopes adorned with a variety of trees such as Jerusalem Oaks, carob, pistachio, pine, and olive trees, the vineyards of Yatir Winery were planted.

Yatir Winery, founded in 2000 as a joint venture between local vine-growers and the renowned Carmel Winery, was established at the foot of the ancient Israelite Tel Arad Fort, an archaeological site located just a short distance from the Yatir Forest vineyards. This small and exclusive winery has since become a symbol of the region. With an annual production of 150,000 bottles, its wines have consistently received high accolades, exceptional recognition, and medals, positioning them among Israel’s top wines according to both local and international wine critics.
