About Granada Winery

The captivating story of Granada Winery starts with Abraham and Ovadia Kashi, who grew up in the city of Baghdad, Iraq in the 1940s. When Abraham was in sixth grade, his father, Yitzhak Kashi, decided to fulfill his dream of immigrating to Israel. Together with his wife Esther and their six younger sons, they embarked on an extraordinary journey in 1951, despite the Iraqi authorities’ prohibition on emigrating to Israel.

The family made their way to Persia (modern-day Iran), where they resided for several months. Eventually, with the help of a Persian passport, they boarded a plane and arrived at the Sha’ar Ha’Aliya transit camp in Israel. The parents were separated from their seven children, who were sent to different kibbutzim. After a few years, the Kashi family reunited and settled in Moshav Gan HaDarom.

The initial years of their integration into Israeli society were challenging. The family lived in a small and cramped dwelling meant for nine people. The parents had to find a suitable source of income to meet their basic needs. To support the family, brothers Avraham and Ovadia began cultivating the land and grew vegetables such as cucumbers, tomatoes, and eggplants. They witnessed the fruits of their labor, and when they completed their military service, the family decided to settle in Gan HaDarom and transition to cultivating citrus trees.

Abraham purchased an agricultural farm in the moshav, where the Kashi family still resides and works to this day. This crucial decision contributed to the family’s economic stability for decades as they continued to grow citrus fruits. However, in the mid-1980s, competition from Spain impacted citrus sales, leading the brothers to seek new sources of income.

The brothers replaced the old citrus trees with persimmon trees and pomegranate grapes of the Wonderbull variety known for their exquisite taste. However, they faced a significant challenge: these special grapes only reached maturity after the Tishrei holidays. The brothers pondered what they would do with the pomegranates after the holidays, realizing that few people would want to consume them. Eventually, they found a solution: they would produce pomegranate wine.

In 2002, Granada Winery was established to create this unique wine. Over the course of a decade, the brothers embarked on research and development, studying the fermentation process, filtering, bottling, and wine storage—fields entirely new to them as septuagenarians. The financial investment was substantial but worthwhile. They produced dry pomegranate wine, semi-dry pomegranate wine, and pomegranate dessert wine.

In 2012, the first series of Granada pomegranate wine was introduced to the market. Since then, the winery has continued to produce and develop pomegranate wine using traditional methods while maintaining its high quality, distinct flavor, and health benefits, including excellent antioxidants essential for the body. The Granada winery has received enthusiastic responses from customers nationwide, experiencing high demand for their diverse range of wines suitable for any occasion.
