About Meishar Winery

Meishar Winery is a pioneering boutique winery founded in 1990 by Chaya and Ze’ev Smilansky in a sandy region of Israel historically associated with the biblical stories of Samson and Delilah. When Meishar Winery was established, the area was largely uncultivated due to its sandy soil composition and limited water resources. However, Chaya and Ze’ev Smilansky saw the potential of the land and became among the first to establish a vineyard in the region. Consequently, Meishar Winery has pioneered viticulture in an area that few others were willing to attempt. The winery began as a small operation for home consumption before evolving into a recognized boutique wine producer.

Wines and Vineyards of Meishar Winery

The sandy soils of the Meishar Winery estate present a unique viticultural challenge that the Smilansky family has turned into an advantage. Sandy soils drain quickly and warm rapidly in spring, producing vines that develop strong root systems and grapes with a distinctive character. Furthermore, the pioneering work of Chaya and Ze’ev Smilansky in establishing the vineyard from scratch has given the winery a deep knowledge of this unusual terroir. The winemaking philosophy at Meishar Winery reflects the same determination and creativity that led to the founding of the estate. Additionally, the long history of the winery, stretching back to 1990, has allowed the team to refine their approach across many vintages. As a result, the wines of Meishar Winery carry the authority of decades of experience in a unique and demanding environment. The wines express the distinctive character of this sandy landscape with authenticity and depth.

Visiting Meishar Winery

Meishar Winery invites guests to discover wines produced from one of the most unusual vineyard sites in Israel. The sandy landscape surrounding the winery carries a rich historical resonance, connecting visitors to the ancient biblical heritage of the region. A visit to Meishar Winery is therefore an encounter with both wine and history. Moreover, the story of Chaya and Ze’ev Smilansky and their pioneering decision to cultivate vines in this challenging environment adds a compelling human dimension to every tasting. The intimate scale of Meishar Winery ensures that guests receive personal attention and a genuine connection to the people who created the estate. Therefore, a visit to Meishar Winery is an opportunity to experience a truly original Israeli winery and to taste wines with a distinctive sense of place and history.
