Business Description

About Ulu Winery

Ulu is a family-run boutique winery in Givat Yeshayahu, in the hills southwest of Jerusalem. The estate began as a private dream rather than a commercial venture: after Amir Ulu completed thirty years of service, he and his wife Hila settled in the village, built their home and horse stables, and later converted a second stable — originally intended as a horse pension — into a working winery.

That origin still shapes the place. The setting is unmistakably Provençal: thick lavender bushes line a broad staircase leading up to a high-ceilinged tasting room that opens onto views across the vines and the surrounding hills. It is a quiet, unhurried spot rather than a large commercial visitor centre, and the winery describes its approach as combining a renewed Israeli wine culture with older traditions carried over from established wine regions.

The Wines

Ulu produces five wines, all made from grapes grown in the surrounding region: a Grenache, a Chardonnay, a Rosé, a Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Cabernet–Merlot blend. Production is deliberately restrained — the winery has the capacity for considerably larger volumes but prioritises quality over output. Alongside its own label, the tasting room also pours a selection of other Israeli and international wines.

Visiting the Winery

Ulu is open for hosted tastings and seated experiences, with reservations required in advance. Through the summer the winery runs a series of sunset evenings on the balcony overlooking the vineyards, pairing a farm-to-table menu with the estate’s wines. “Ulu at Home” packages, which combine prepared dishes and accompaniments with winery wine, and gift cards are also available.

  • Opening hours: Sunday–Thursday 11:00–16:00; Friday 09:00–15:00
  • Reservations: Required — group visits by arrangement
  • Region: Judean Hills, Givat Yeshayahu

Kashrut

Ulu’s wines are kosher. The winery’s dairy kitchen, however, is not under kashrut certification. Visitors who keep kosher should factor this in when ordering food on site — the wine and the kitchen are certified differently.
