About Hermon River Winery

Hermon River Winery is a boutique winery located in Moshav Shaar in northern Israel, in a region defined by the dramatic presence of Mount Hermon. The winery was founded in 2003 by Michel Alharar, whose path to winemaking began as a personal fascination rather than a professional ambition. Michel was inspired by encounters with French farmers and the simplicity and authenticity of their approach to wine production. Furthermore, this inspiration sparked a determination to pursue winemaking as a serious craft of his own.

Michel devoted considerable time to formal training before launching the winery. He studied wines and winemaking for a year and a half at Tel Hai College. In addition, he gained practical cellar experience by working for a year at the Alexander Winery in Beit Yitzhak. As a result, when Hermon River Winery opened in 2003, it was built on a solid foundation of both academic knowledge and hands-on experience.

Wines and Northern Terroir

The northern Israeli setting of Hermon River Winery provides a cool and distinctive growing environment. The influence of Mount Hermon, with its significant snowfall and snowmelt, moderates summer temperatures and contributes to the freshness of the wines. Consequently, the wines produced here carry a character shaped by altitude, cool mountain air, and the volcanic and alluvial soils of the region. Moreover, Michel’s French-inspired philosophy of simplicity and authenticity guides every winemaking decision in the cellar.

The winery produces a range of red and white wines that reflect the unique qualities of the northern Israeli terroir. In addition, the personal attention Michel brings to every batch ensures that each wine meets his exacting standards. Therefore, the portfolio is a genuine expression of his dedication, heritage, and vision for what wine from this northern corner of Israel can be.

Visiting Hermon River Winery

The visitor center at Hermon River Winery was built from an ancient barn that once belonged to Michel’s parents, Veronika and Zakharona, giving it a deep personal and family significance. This unique space creates a warm and meaningful atmosphere for every tasting experience. Furthermore, the northern Israeli countryside and the proximity to Mount Hermon make the winery a scenic and genuinely memorable destination.

For wine lovers seeking boutique wines from one of Israel’s northernmost growing regions, Hermon River Winery is a rewarding and inspiring stop. Consequently, it exemplifies the kind of personal commitment and respect for heritage that produces wines of genuine character and depth.
