Business Description

About Hermon River Winery

Hermon River Winery is a boutique winery in Moshav Shaar in northern Israel, in the shadow of Mount Hermon. It was founded in 2003 by Michel Alharar, whose interest in wine began with encounters with French farmers and the plain, authentic way they made it. Before opening, he trained seriously: eighteen months studying wine and winemaking at Tel Hai College, followed by a year working the cellar at Alexander Winery in Beit Yitzhak.

The Wines and the Northern Terroir

The far-northern setting gives a cool growing environment. Snowfall and snowmelt from Mount Hermon temper the summer heat, and the region’s volcanic and alluvial soils, high altitude and clean mountain air shape wines with real freshness. Michel’s French-inspired preference for simplicity guides the reds and whites alike, each made with close personal attention.

Visiting the Winery

The visitor centre occupies an old barn that once belonged to Michel’s parents, Veronika and Zakharona, which gives tastings a warm, family feel. With Mount Hermon nearby and the northern countryside all around, it makes a scenic stop for anyone seeking wines from one of Israel’s highest, coolest corners.
