Business Description

About Sde Boker Winery

Sde Boker Winery occupies a singular position in Israeli wine, making kosher wines from the Negev Highlands at Kibbutz Sde Boker, the desert community best known as the retirement home of Israel’s founding Prime Minister, David Ben-Gurion. Ben-Gurion believed deeply in the potential of the Negev, and the winery honours that pioneering vision, showing through its wines that the desert can yield grapes of real quality when cultivated with knowledge and respect for the land. Wine production here is part of the kibbutz’s broader agricultural enterprise, applying modern viticultural science to one of the most challenging growing environments in the world.

The Wines

The vineyards sit at roughly 470 metres above sea level, among limestone cliffs, ancient riverbeds and vast desert skies. Rainfall is limited, so precise drip irrigation delivers exactly what the vines need, and fierce daytime heat gives way to much cooler nights, a swing that concentrates flavour and preserves freshness. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Muscat have proven well suited to the setting, giving wines of deep colour, concentrated fruit and a spicy, mineral character. The dry desert air also reduces the risk of fungal disease, allowing more natural farming through the season, and the wines carry a purity and directness that speaks clearly of their origin.

Visiting the Winery

A visit is set within one of Israel’s most historically resonant landscapes, inside the Negev Highlands National Park amid dramatic craters and ancient caravan routes. The winery welcomes visitors for tastings of its desert wines, and the experience pairs easily with the Ben-Gurion Heritage Institute, the ancient Nabataean city of Avdat and the nearby Ramon Crater, making Sde Boker a gateway to an unforgettable Negev journey.
