About Carmel Winery

Carmel is the first commercial winery in Israel, founded in 1882 by Baron Edmond de Rothschild as part of his effort to develop Israeli agriculture and support Jewish settlement. It has operated continuously for more than 140 years and remains the country’s largest and most historically significant winery. It works from two historic sites: Zichron Ya’akov on the Carmel range, and Rishon LeZion on the central coastal plain, whose cellars have shaped the Israeli wine industry from its earliest days.

The Wines

Carmel works with 108 grower families whose vineyards span generations and several regions, letting it make wines across many styles and price points, from everyday table wines to premium, ageworthy selections. Well-known labels include Selected, Private Collection and Mediterranean, alongside the prestigious Single Vineyard series that highlights specific terroir-driven plots. The winery keeps investing in modern production while preserving the historic character of both sites.

Visiting the Winery

Both Zichron Ya’akov and Rishon LeZion welcome visitors for tours and tastings; Zichron Ya’akov offers tours of 19th-century cellars and barrel rooms, with a broad tasting across the portfolio. A visit is a journey through the history of Israeli wine, suited to first-timers and collectors alike.
