Business Description

The Birth of a Visionary Enterprise

In 1997, Nira and Alon Tzdok, a pioneering couple from the founders of Moshav Kadesh in Barnea (Nitsani Sinai), embarked on a remarkable journey to establish a winery like no other. Their vision was to create exceptional wines solely from the grapes harvested from their vineyards. With unwavering determination, they took a brave and unconventional step by planting the first 10 dunams of Cabernet Sauvignon in the desert region they owned near Moshav Kadesh in Barnea. Despite skepticism from wine experts who doubted the possibility of producing quality grapes in the desert, Nira and Alon followed the murmurs of their hearts and remained steadfast in their pursuit.

A Desert Oasis of Fine Wine

In the year 2000, the vines flourished in the arid land of Parkan, and Nira and Alon took their passion for winemaking to the next level. They acquired barrels, plastic containers, and basic equipment for wine production. In a limited edition of 3,000 bottles, they proudly created their first desert wine. The response was overwhelming, with the wine selling out within four months, primarily to friends and family. Encouraged by the enthusiastic reception, Nira and Alon decided to expand their vineyard by planting an additional 10 acres of Merlot. Simultaneously, they increased their production to 5,000 bottles, which once again sold out prior to the next harvest.

Overcoming Challenges and Expanding Horizons

In 2003, when the leading winery discovered that Alon was making wine at home, they confronted him with an ultimatum that would change the landscape of desert wines. They demanded that Alon cease his private production and sell the entire crop to them. Unyielding in the face of pressure, Alon made a bold move. He decided to plant another 10 dunams of Cabernet Sauvignon, expanding the vineyard and producing a remarkable 15,000 bottles of wine. Recognizing the commercial potential of kosher wine, Alon ventured into the production of kosher wine for the first time.

The Journey Towards a Family Boutique Winery

Nira and Alon soon realized that while producing wine was a passion, marketing it presented a unique set of challenges. They initially partnered with a small marketing company to promote Kadesh Winery wines in Barnea. However, when the company failed to effectively market their wines, the family decided to take matters into their own hands. Determined to build their business independently, they established the first family boutique winery in the Negev—Kadesh Winery in Barnea.

A Union of Expertise and Dedication

Yogev, the eldest son, was entrusted with learning the intricacies of wine production from the masters—the Italians. He embarked on a journey to Italy, where he studied wine technology at the University of Florence for three years, immersing himself in the language and culture of winemaking. Graduating with honors, Yogev returned to Israel, bringing back a wealth of professional knowledge to contribute to the winery. Meanwhile, Gilad, the younger and less experienced son, took on the role of exclusive marketer for the winery. Nira, the matriarch of the family, assumed the mantle of operational management, overseeing the winery’s day-to-day affairs. Together, the family embarked on the path to realizing their dream of producing high-quality wines from Negev grapes.

From Humble Beginnings to Success

By 2006, Kadesh Winery had grown significantly, producing 25,000 bottles of wine annually—a testament to their dedication and expertise. Their production consistently sold out each year. The winery found a new marketing channel, catering to American Jews in the United States, where approximately thirty percent of their wines were sold, thanks to the kosher certification. The remaining production was sold directly at the winery, as well as in renowned restaurants and leading wine shops, both locally and beyond.

Kadesh Winery in Barnea stands as a testament to the Tzdok family’s pioneering spirit, resilience, and unwavering belief in the potential of the desert to produce exceptional wines. With each bottle crafted, their dream is brought to life, capturing the essence of the Negev in every sip and inviting wine enthusiasts to savor the unique flavors born from this arid landscape.
