Business Description

Kerem Montefiore Winery is a kosher boutique wine producer founded in 2010, specialising in Petite Sirah — a variety that has become a signature of several of Israel’s most innovative boutique producers. The winery’s name pays tribute to Sir Moses Montefiore, the celebrated nineteenth-century British-Jewish philanthropist and communal leader whose decades of dedicated work on behalf of Jewish communities around the world, including extensive charitable activities in the Land of Israel, laid important groundwork for the modern Jewish agricultural revival. Montefiore visited the Holy Land seven times between 1827 and 1875, financing agricultural settlements, establishing Mishkenot Sha’ananim (the first Jewish neighbourhood outside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem), and consistently advocating for Jewish self-sufficiency through agricultural work.

A winery bearing his name thus connects contemporary Israeli wine production to the nineteenth-century vision of Jewish agricultural renaissance in the ancient homeland — a vision that ultimately came to fruition in ways Montefiore himself could not have imagined. The winery’s focus on Petite Sirah is particularly noteworthy. Petite Sirah — known in France as Durif, a cross between Syrah and Peloursin — has found an enthusiastic second home in Israel, where its natural affinity for warm, dry climates allows it to produce wines of enormous concentration, deep inky colour, and complex tannin structure.

Israeli Petite Sirah wines have attracted favourable international attention for their distinctive character and age-worthiness, and Kerem Montefiore has been a leader in exploring this variety’s potential in Israeli conditions. The Judean hills provide an excellent foundation for Petite Sirah production: the combination of warm days that drive full ripening, cool nights that preserve freshness, and well-drained limestone soils produces grapes of exceptional quality. The winery operates a tasting room in Jaffa — the ancient port city that has been absorbed into the Tel Aviv metropolitan area — making it accessible to the large wine-interested population of the coastal plain without requiring a journey to the hill vineyards where the grapes are grown.

This urban tasting room strategy is increasingly common among Israeli boutique wineries that wish to reach their primary consumer base in the Tel Aviv area. The kosher certification makes Kerem Montefiore’s wines accessible to observant Jewish consumers both in Israel and internationally.
