Business Description

La Terra Promessa — The Promised Land in Italian — is a boutique wine producer in Moshav Shachar in the Judean foothills, a winery whose very name is a statement of philosophy and identity. By invoking in Italian the Hebrew concept of the Land of Promise — the land that God covenanted to give to Abraham and his descendants, the land that Moses saw from Mount Nebo but was never permitted to enter, the land that has been the central geographic aspiration of Jewish consciousness for four thousand years — the winery declares its conviction that wine is not merely an agricultural product but the liquid expression of a covenant between people and land, between the present and an ancient, ongoing promise. The use of Italian rather than Hebrew for this charged phrase adds another dimension: Italy is home to one of the world’s greatest wine traditions, and the name suggests an aspiration to the standards of Italian wine craft — the integration of terroir, tradition, and innovation that characterises the best Italian wine producers — applied to the specific context of the Promised Land itself.

Moshav Shachar sits in the Judean foothills south of the Elah Valley, in the ancient Shephelah region where the Judean hills slope gradually westward toward the coastal plain. This transitional landscape — neither fully highland nor fully coastal plain — benefits from a unique combination of growing conditions: elevations of 200 to 400 metres that provide some cooling compared to the plain below, terra rossa soils over limestone that offer good drainage and mineral character, and a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and adequate winter rainfall. The Judean foothills have produced wine since antiquity: the great wine presses of ancient Maresha (excavated extensively by Israeli archaeologists), the vineyard terraces carved into hillsides throughout the Shephelah, and the numerous wine storage installations found at sites across the region attest to an ancient wine industry of considerable scale and sophistication.

La Terra Promessa Winery operates a restaurant on site, making it a full wine country destination where visitors can experience both the wines and the landscape of the Judean foothills. The non-kosher production allows greater flexibility in the cellar and in staffing, and the winery produces wines that reflect its commitment to quality and its sense of connection to the ancient promise embedded in every bottle.
