About Latroun Winery

Latroun is one of the oldest and most historically significant wineries in Israel, run by the Trappist monks of the Latrun Monastery. The Trappist order, a reformed branch of the Cistercian family, traces its origins to the Citeaux monastery in Burgundy, France, in the twelfth century, and the monks established Latrun as a centre of spiritual life and agricultural enterprise in the Holy Land. The winery therefore carries a tradition of winemaking that runs back through centuries of monastic practice, set in a serene landscape suited to both meditation and viticulture.

The Wines

The monks treat winemaking as part of their way of life, bringing the same patience and dedication to the cellar that they give to their spiritual practice. The vineyards around the monastery sit in the Shephelah foothills, where generous sunshine and cool breezes create favourable conditions for the vines, and decades of work have built deep knowledge of the local terroir. The wines are known for their quality and consistency, and the monastic setting and approach give them an identity unlike any other Israeli winery, sought after by enthusiasts and by those who value the heritage behind each bottle.

Visiting the Winery

A visit to Latroun is a journey into one of the most unusual wine destinations in Israel. The monastery grounds offer a peaceful, reflective atmosphere that invites visitors to slow down, taste the monks’ wines and explore the historic buildings and gardens. Its closeness to major cities makes it an accessible day trip, and the blend of monastic heritage, beautiful landscape and quality wine makes it a destination unlike any other in the country.

Information last updated: July 26, 2026. Please confirm hours and details directly with the winery before visiting.
