About Rota Winery

Rota is a boutique desert winery in the Halutza sands on the banks of Nahal Revivim, on the Negev plateau. It is part of an ecological farm set up in late 2004 by Erez Rota, an artist, farmer and winemaker, fulfilling a long-held wish to build an agricultural place fully in tune with the desert. He first started a small winery studio in Tel Aviv in 1999, then moved the whole project to the Negev in 2004, onto a site that takes in the remnants of an ancient Nabatean farming settlement, so the vines grow among centuries-old terraces.

The Wines

The vineyards lie at around 300 metres, on loess, sand and pebbles that drain freely, under a desert climate of cold, dry winters and hot, dry summers. Constant breezes and cool nights slow the ripening and build complexity, and these demanding conditions give grapes of real character. Erez Rota works the land with an artist’s eye and great patience, and the ecological approach keeps it healthy for the long term, so each bottle captures the essence of the Negev.

Visiting the Winery

Rota offers a rare chance to see winemaking in one of Israel’s most extreme terroirs: a working ecological farm where art, agriculture and wine meet, set among the Halutza sands and ancient Nabatean ruins. A visit is as much a desert experience as a tasting.
